Start with your local library. Talk to a librarian to see if they need volunteers.
Remember that there are a variety of library systems in the area: city and county public libraries, school libraries, academic libraries, and special libraries or archives. Explore the possibilities!
Give yourself time! Often, libraries will require training sessions and background checks or fingerprinting. It might take some time for you to start working.
Tutors: Many public libraries have tutoring programs for literacy learning or homework. As a tutor, you'll work in the library regularly and become familiar with its programs.
Friends of the Library: Almost all public libraries have a Friends of the Library group. Volunteering with a group with give you experience with book sorting, customer service, fundraising, budgeting, and programming.
Docents: Museums and libraries are closely aligned, and often, museums have special libraries. Becoming a docent is another way to receive library-adjacent training. You'll come to understand a collection and exhibit, develop communication and presentation skills, and improve your customer service skills.
⭐️ Pro Tip: Become familiar with the library or organization by visiting it online and in person before offering your services.
⭐️ Pro Tip: Be patient with the time and paperwork associated with volunteer and paid library work. Many libraries require background checks.
⭐️ Pro Tip: If you need work experience units for the certificate, visit LIB 098 Work Experience.
The California State Library links to a public library volunteer database through VolunteerMatch.

Volunteers provide valuable assistance to our staff through a variety of activities, including preserving historic records, preparing them for access and assisting public patrons with research. Their work makes a difference!
Volunteers should have an interest in American history, genealogy or archival management, and should be able to spend at least six hours a week on assigned tasks.
If you're looking for volunteer opportunities, email Maria Notarangelo (mnotarangelo@valleycollege.edu). We try to keep up on local libraries that need volunteers.
